Heat as medicine.
The RelaxSauna Far Infrared Sauna.
Intermittent heat is one of the most well-researched hormetic triggers available - activating the body's own anti-inflammatory and detoxification pathways. The RelaxSauna far infrared sauna makes it accessible, portable, and clinically credible.

The science behind intermittent heat
Why your body needs heat stress — and what happens when it gets it.
Intermittent heat is one of nine core triggers in the Intermittent Living protocol. Like all hormetic triggers, a brief manageable dose of heat activates protective and repair pathways that would otherwise lie dormant in a life lived at constant comfort.
Anti-inflammatory
Heat exposure activates heat shock proteins and reduces systemic inflammatory markers — supporting the same pathways that chronic modern stress dysregulates.
Detoxifying
Far-infrared heat penetrates deeper than conventional heat, supporting the body's own detoxification processes and promoting cellular repair at a deeper level.
Cardiovascular protection
Research links regular sauna use at 4-7 sessions per week to significantly lower cardiovascular mortality risk — one of the most robust findings in the hormesis literature.
"Mild hyperthermia activates Nrf2 — the body's master switch for its own antioxidant, detoxification, and anti-inflammatory systems. This is not heat as comfort. It is heat as a precisely dosed clinical tool."

Why I recommend the RelaxSauna
A tool I use personally and recommend clinically.
In the clinical psychoneuroimmunology framework, intermittent heat sits alongside fasting, cold exposure, and breath control as one of the core hormetic triggers that restore the body's adaptive capacity. The challenge has always been accessibility — a clinical-grade sauna session is not something most people can build into a daily routine.
RelaxSauna changes that. The far-infrared technology delivers genuine heat penetration at a therapeutic level, in a portable format that works in a flat, a spare room, or a clinic space. Fast to heat, easy to set up, and genuinely effective — this is the closest thing to a clinical-grade hormetic heat tool that is accessible at home.

What far infrared supports
A wide range of conditions and presentations.
Far infrared therapy does not claim to cure disease. Research demonstrates it may help alleviate symptoms, improve circulation, support detoxification, and promote overall function. Many of these presentations sit directly within the cPNI framework I work with clinically.
Pain and Inflammation
Fibromyalgia, arthritis, neuropathy, muscle soreness, tendonitis, joint pain, post-surgical recovery, carpal tunnel, sciatica
Cardiovascular and Circulatory
Hypertension, poor circulation, cardiovascular disease support, endothelial dysfunction, varicose veins, lymphedema
Detoxification and Metabolic Health
Heavy metal toxicity, mold and mycotoxins, post-chemotherapy detox, metabolic syndrome, blood sugar regulation, weight loss support
Immune and Inflammatory Disorders
Autoimmune conditions including Lupus, Hashimoto's and MS, chronic fatigue, Lyme disease, Long COVID, post-viral fatigue, chronic inflammation
Neurological and Mental Health
Anxiety, stress, depression, brain fog, sleep disorders, post-concussion recovery, Parkinson's symptom management, migraine relief
Skin Health
Eczema, psoriasis, acne, rosacea, anti-ageing, collagen support, skin detoxification
Women's Health and Hormonal Balance
Menstrual pain, endometriosis, PCOS, menopause symptoms, hormonal balance, fertility support
Athletic Performance and Recovery
Muscle recovery, injury rehabilitation, endurance, lactic acid reduction, flexibility, mobility
Chronic Conditions
Multiple Sclerosis, Crohn's disease, ulcerative colitis, kidney function support, Hashimoto's, chronic pain from old injuries
Using it as a hormetic trigger
How to integrate the RelaxSauna into an Intermittent Living protocol.
01
Frequency
3 sessions per week is the starting point. Research supports 4-7 sessions weekly for cardiovascular benefit.
02
Duration
15-30 minutes per session. The hormetic dose is moderate — not extreme. Discomfort that resolves is the signal.
03
Timing
Late afternoon or evening works well — the heat rise and subsequent cool-down supports sleep onset and parasympathetic recovery.
04
Recovery
Hydrate well before and after. The hormetic benefit comes from the challenge and the recovery — not the heat alone.

A note on far infrared specifically. Unlike conventional sauna heat, far infrared penetrates tissue directly, generating a deeper thermal effect at a lower ambient temperature. This makes it well suited as a passive hot tool, used on dedicated heat days alongside active strategies such as hot yoga or HIIT. The Pruimboom protocol recommends 2 rounds of 30 minutes. Keep the head out of the infrared field, and introduce sessions gradually if you are new to heat exposure or working with neuroinflammation.
