Listening to Our Gut: Emotions, Intuition, and the Hidden Intelligence in Our Bodies
Expressions like “go with your gut” or “I just had a feeling” aren’t just metaphors—they point to a profound biological truth. The gut plays a central role in how we sense, feel, and make decisions. While the brain is often seen as the control centre, it's actually part of a larger network of systems working together—our brain, nervous system, immune system, and gut—all constantly communicating to help us navigate the world safely and intuitively.
The gut is home to its own complex nervous system, called the enteric nervous system (ENS), often referred to as the “second brain.” It contains millions of neurons that process information and influence emotional well-being. Through the gut-brain axis—a two-way communication network involving nerves, hormones, and immune signals—what happens in the gut is instantly shared with the brain. If our gut is inflamed, undernourished, or stressed, our thoughts and responses are directly impacted.
This gut-brain conversation explains why emotional states like fear or anxiety can cause physical sensations in the stomach, such as “butterflies” or loss of appetite. The gut is an emotional radar, scanning internal and external conditions and alerting us when something needs attention. This feedback loop affects not just how we feel, but how we make decisions, often in the form of “gut instincts.”
These instincts aren’t random—they’re shaped by deep-rooted body memories from early life. Long before we could speak, we learned the world through feelings like warmth, hunger, and comfort. These emotional imprints form the foundation of how we later experience stress, safety, and connection. The insular cortex, a region in the brain, stores these patterns and helps us quickly recognise similar emotional states later in life.
Natural opioids produced by our brain also influence gut function. These chemicals, which help us feel calm and connected—especially during bonding—play a critical role in developing healthy gut-brain communication. When we experience secure emotional attachments early in life, our opioid system develops in balance, supporting healthy gut function.
Stress is another key player. When we encounter a threat or pressure—whether it’s public speaking, a heated conversation, or chronic life stress—the brain and gut coordinate a stress response. Our heart rate increases, breath shortens, and the gut tightens. These physical signals influence how we respond. If the gut is calm and healthy, we can respond with clarity and empathy. But if the gut is distressed, due to trauma, poor diet, or chronic stress, we’re more likely to react impulsively or defensively.
New research reveals that gut health is directly linked to mental health. A disrupted gut microbiome can contribute to anxiety and depression, just as psychological stress can harm gut health. This interplay means our emotional resilience depends on how we nourish and care for our gut. Inflammation in the gut can spark inflammation in the brain, altering mood, focus, and decision-making.
Decision-making, therefore, isn’t just cognitive—it’s deeply physical and emotional. Feelings like hunger, fatigue, or sudden unease aren’t distractions. They’re signals guiding us to pay attention and respond wisely. The more we listen to these inner cues, the more aligned and empowered our decisions become.
The programming of this entire system begins in childhood. Safe, loving touch and consistent emotional care help regulate the gut-brain relationship. From the womb onward, how we are nurtured affects how we manage discomfort and stress. When early bonding is disrupted, our body may stay on alert, mistrusting its own signals. But with mindfulness and compassion, it is possible to rewire these patterns, reconnecting to our inner guidance and resilience.
Ultimately, our gut is more than a digestive organ—it is a gateway to self-awareness, intuition, and healing. By listening deeply to its wisdom, we learn to navigate life not just with logic, but with our whole, integrated selves.
