The Powerful Effects of Adaptogens

Whilst the term adaptogen may not have been accepted in mainstream medicine, there can be no doubt that there exists in nature, plants that are capable of modulating our stress response. The term adaptogen was first introduced to the world of science by Russian toxicologist Nikolay Lazarev in 1957 refer to ‘substances that increase the state of non-specific resistance in stress’.

Studies have shown that adaptogens are powerful substances that are able to show neuroprotective, anti-fatigue, antidepressive and anti-anxiolytic qualities and have great potential to help combat age-related disorders and psychological stress. They do this by stimulating our cellular defence systems at the same time protecting us against oxidative stress.

Overall, more than 70 plants have been described as adaptogenic. Their impact is not only due to one substance but a combination of different molecules working together. The use of natural adaptogens by humans has a long history of use in physical weakness, illness and impaired cognitive ability.
• They bring nourishment or nutritive strength
• They maintain balance by increasing receptor sensitivity increasing or lowering hormonal signals
• They are non-specific and act on multiple parts of the body at the same time.
• They are non-toxic and can be used for extended periods of time.

Here are some of the most well-known plant adaptogens:
• American ginseng (Panax quinquefolius) - Boosts working memory, reaction time, calmness, and immune system
• Ashwagandha (Withania somnifera) - Reduces stress and anxiety
• Astragalus (Astragalus membranaceus) – Used for fatigue and fibromyalgia
• Goji berry (Lycium barbarum) - Boosts energy, physical and mental performance, calmness, and sense of well-being, and can also improve sleep
• Jiaogulan (Gynostemma Pentaphyllum) - Reduces stress and boosts endurance
• Rhodiola rosea (R. rosea) – Helps with physical and mental fatigue
• Tulsi/Holy basil (Ocimum sanctum) - Reduces physical and mental stress, stress-related anxiety, and depression
